Automatic Transmission and Engine Stall Test (Vehicle Stationary)
The test is performed to determine whether the friction elements are slipping or whether the hydraulic components are malfunctioning.
When performing the test, no one should stand in front of or behind the vehicle.
TEST PROCEDURE
1. Before testing, check the levels of all operating fluids and, if necessary, top them up to the normal level. The transmission fluid temperature should be within 80–90°C, and the coolant temperature 80–90 °C.
2. Place wheel chocks under the front and rear wheels.
3. Connect a tachometer to the engine.
4. Apply the parking brake and depress the brake pedal.
5. Start the engine.
6. Move the selector lever to the "D" position. With your left foot, depress the brake pedal fully, and with your right foot, gradually depress the accelerator pedal. When the engine speed no longer increases, read the tachometer and release the accelerator pedal. To prevent damage to the transmission, limit the test to 5 seconds. If more than one test is required with the engine running, move the selector lever to the N position and let the engine idle for 2 minutes. Engine idling cools the transmission fluid and prevents it from deteriorating.
Engine speed during the stall test (torque converter and engine performance check with the vehicle stationary): 2300–2700 min⁻¹.
7. Perform the same test with the selector lever in the "R" position.
If the engine speed is above specification in the D position, transmission fluid pressure is insufficient due to leakage in the forward clutch or the one-way clutch.
If the engine speed is above specification in the R position, transmission fluid pressure is insufficient due to leakage in the direct clutch or the low and reverse brake band.
If the engine speed is below specification in the D position, transmission fluid pressure is insufficient due to wear of the oil pump or a malfunction of the torque converter.
