Catalytic Converter

~1min read

GENERAL INFORMATION

The catalytic converter is an exhaust emission control device installed in the exhaust system.

Externally, the catalytic converter looks like a muffler, but it serves to reduce harmful emissions. WARNING: If unburned fuel-air mixture enters the catalytic converter, it overheats and there is a risk of fire. To avoid this danger and other damage, observe the safety precautions.

Do not drive with a very low fuel level. If the fuel tank runs empty, misfiring may occur and the catalytic converter will be subjected to severe stress.

Do not let the engine idle for more than 10 minutes at fast idle speed, or more than 20 minutes at normal idle speed.

The engine must be in good operating condition. Malfunctions in the ignition system or fuel system may cause the catalytic converter to overheat severely.

Do not start the engine by towing the vehicle.

Never turn off the ignition while the vehicle is moving.

Do not run the engine at idle where flammable materials such as grass, leaves, paper, or rags are present.

While the engine is running, keep people away from the exhaust pipe, as well as flammable objects. Exhaust gas has a very high temperature.

Do not run the engine at full throttle.

Use only unleaded gasoline.

If the engine is hard to start or stalls frequently, have the vehicle checked as soon as possible. To ensure proper operation of the catalytic converter and the entire emission control system, have the vehicle inspected periodically in accordance with the Nissan maintenance schedule. Diesel engine: Use diesel fuel with a cetane number of 50 (cetane index 45) or higher.
