Possible Malfunctions
GENERAL INFORMATION
The following provides instructions for troubleshooting the faults and malfunctions that most often occur under road conditions. For more detailed information on locating the causes of faults, refer to the relevant chapters. If the engine does not start and the starter motor does not turn
PROCEDURE
1. If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, make sure the selector lever is in the "P" or "N" position.
2. Make sure the battery terminals are clean and the cable clamps are secure.
3. Turn on the headlights and try to start the engine. If the headlights are very dim when cranking, the most likely cause is a discharged battery. Start the engine from another vehicle's battery (see subsection 1.12.1).
If the engine does not start but the starter motor operates normally

Location of fuel system and ignition system connectors
PROCEDURE
1. Check that there is fuel in the tank.
2. Check for moisture on the engine electrical components and connectors.
3. Turn the ignition switch OFF and wipe the areas where moisture has collected with a dry cloth. Apply a water-repellent aerosol (WD-40 or equivalent) to the fuel system and ignition system connectors (A, B, C, D) (refer to the illustration Fuel System and Ignition System Connector Locations). Pay particular attention to the ignition coil low-voltage connector and the high-tension wires.

4. Check that the high-tension cables are securely connected to the spark plugs (A) by pressing on the cable boot.

5. Check that the high-tension cables are securely connected to the distributor cap (B) and that the connector is securely attached to the distributor.

6. Check that the high-tension cables are securely connected to the ignition coil (C).

7. Check that the electrical connectors (D) are securely connected (with the ignition OFF). If moisture is suspected, treat the connectors with WD-40 water-displacing aerosol.
