ECU configuration

Essential equipment

diagnostic tool

The system can be programmed and reprogrammed through the diagnostic socket using the diagnostic tool (technical note 3585A).

WARNING
  • Switch on the diagnostic tool.
  • Check the battery condition.
  • Connect a battery charger (during the entire (re)programming of the ECU, the engine cooling fans switch on automatically).
  • Observe the engine temperature limits given in the diagnostic tool before any (re)programming.

ECU PROGRAMMING, REPROGRAMMING OR REPLACEMENT OPERATIONS

K9K

  • Before any programming, reprogramming or aftersales ECU replacement, save the following data in the diagnostic tool:
  • the C2I parameters (individual injector correction),
  • the engine adaptive values using command SC003 “Save ECU data”.

After any programming, reprogramming or ECU replacement:

  • switch off the ignition,
  • start then stop the engine (to initialise the ECU) and wait 30 seconds,
  • switch the ignition back on.
  • use the diagnostic tool:
  • use command SC001 “Write saved data” to restore the C2I and the engine adaptive values,
  • enter the VIN using command VP010 “Write VIN”,
  • clear any faults reported by the diagnostic tool on all ECUs,
  • erase the ECU memory,
  • carry out a road test,
  • carry out a new check with the diagnostic tool.
WARNING
  • The injection ECU keeps the anti-theft code for life.
  • The system has no fault-finding code.
  • Do not carry out tests with ECUs borrowed from the parts store or from another vehicle; they must be returned afterwards.
  • The ECUs can no longer be coded.
Note: If commands SC001 and SC003 are forgotten or do not work, after programming, reprogramming or replacing the ECU, the C2I of each injector must be entered manually by reading the C2I on the injectors (Diesel Injection chapter, Diesel injector setting value, page 13B-73).

F9Q

  • When reprogramming or replacing the ECU, the new ECU must learn the IMA code (injector flow correction) for all four injectors.

There are two possibilities:

  • If communication with the ECU is possible:
  • download the data from the old ECU to the diagnostic tool,
  • replace the ECU,
  • transfer the data from the diagnostic tool to the new ECU,
  • use the diagnostic tool to make sure the ECU has not detected a fault related to the injector codes and that the dashboard warning light is off.
  • If communication with the ECU is impossible:
  • replace the ECU,
  • read the data from the injectors,
  • enter it into the ECU using the diagnostic tool,
  • reconfigure the ECU for the equipment fitted (air conditioning),
  • use the diagnostic tool to make sure the ECU has not detected a fault related to the injector codes and that the dashboard warning light is off.
