Technical Description

Oil consumption

~1min read

Part of the engine oil burns off during the lubricating process. Therefore, oil consumption is a completely normal process. Well-run-in engines consume 0.2 L per 1000 km; Audi specifies a maximum permissible consumption of 1 L per 1000 km.

Oil consumption of your Audi 80 depends on the following circumstances:

Overfilling the oil causes high consumption, because the crankcase ventilation blows out the excess.

Thin oil burns off faster than thick oil. Summer oil becomes as thin as water when heated, and consumption increases accordingly. All-season oil remains more viscous; drivers who cover long distances in particular may notice lower consumption of this oil.

All-season oil that stays in the engine too long becomes thinner, its higher viscosity class is "lost", and the need for topping up increases accordingly.

An aggressive driving style increases oil consumption in addition to higher fuel consumption. This is especially noticeable if a new engine is subjected to high loads right away.

During break-in, the engine requires a larger amount of lubricant.

Engine leakage. Check using the procedure described in the Engines chapter.

Engine defect; for example, a defective valve stem seal (oil seal cap), excessive clearance between the valve guide and valve seal, or piston rings that are defective or installed incorrectly.
