Technical Description

Checking the manual transmission oil level

~2min read

Left: the oil level check plug (1) of the manual transmission is located on the transmission housing, on the right side in the direction of travel, at half height. The drain plug (2) is located at the bottom of the transmission.

Right: the power steering fluid level in the reservoir (2) must be checked with the engine running. If the reservoir markings are not visible, unscrew the reservoir cap (1) and check with the dipstick. The arrows indicate the marks.

В коробке передач масло не расходуется так, как в двигателе, и может вытечь только

Oil in the transmission is not consumed as in the engine and can only leak through defective seals. If no oil-soaked dirty areas are visible on the outside of the transmission housing, this inspection point is complete. Otherwise, check the oil level. The filler (and level check) plug is located on the left side in the direction of travel, at half height on the transmission housing next to the drive shaft.

PROCEDURE

Raise the vehicle to a horizontal position.

Remove the plug using a 17 mm internal hex key.

If the transmission oil starts to flow out immediately, the oil level is correct.

If not, insert a finger into the opening and check whether the oil reaches the opening: this indicates a sufficient oil level.

If the shortage is greater, add the appropriate transmission oil at a service station or workshop.

To check the ATF level, pull the dipstick out of the guide tube (3), located at the rear left of the engine compartment. With warm ATF, the fluid level must be within the normal range (1) between the two marks. The extension (2) can also be used to check the level with cold ATF.

Note: Filling by hand with very viscous transmission oil using a funnel and a long hose is a considerable test of patience, even with warm oil, and is therefore not recommended. It is better to use special canisters or a syringe with an integrated hose for topping up.

Correct transmission oil grade
You no longer need to think about changing the transmission oil. The transaxle is equipped with a reservoir from which possible contaminants are collected by a magnet.

However, the transmission oil must meet certain requirements. Audi specifies the use of SAE 75W-90 viscosity oil with specification G 50. This is a synthetic oil.
