Operating Instructions for All-Wheel-Drive Vehicles
General
If the front axle or one of the front wheels is raised, there is no drive.
If the rear axle is raised, there is no drive.
If one of the rear wheels is raised, there is no drive, unless the rear axle differential is locked.
If the driveshaft is disconnected from the transmission, there is no drive.
Brake Test
PROCEDURE
The brake test can be performed axle by axle on a standard low-speed brake tester (max 6 km/h).
The drive must come from the test stand.
Gears or the differential lock must not be engaged.
Power Test
PROCEDURE
The power test cannot be performed on a standard two-wheel dynamometer.
A four-wheel dynamometer must be used.
Wheels
The rear wheel suspension of the Audi 80 quattro consists of the following components:

1 – upper control arm;
2 – stabilizer bar;
3 – wheel hub bearing housing;
4 – drive shaft;
5 – lower control arm.
All four wheels must have the same rolling circumference (ideally the same tread depth).
Wheel balancing on the vehicle (dynamic balancing) is only possible if all four wheels are raised. The drive must come from the vehicle engine (not from the balancing machine).
Important: Release the parking brake.
Winter Tires
Winter tires should be used not only on front-wheel-drive but also on all-wheel-drive vehicles, not so much for dynamic reasons as for braking performance.
Snow chains must be fitted where their use is specified, including on all-wheel-drive models. Here too, the argument in favor of their use is better braking performance.
Towing
If all four wheels of the Audi are rolling on the road surface during towing, no special instructions apply.
If the wheels of one axle can no longer roll (after an accident), the vehicle must be loaded onto a low-bed tow truck.
If such a tow truck is not available, the vehicle may be towed with one axle raised. Conditions: no more than 50 km and no faster than 50 km/h. The differential lock must not be engaged (which is unlikely in any case). If these limits are exceeded, the transmission may be damaged due to lack of lubrication.
