Technical Description

Lubricating Cable Controls, Hinges and Locks

~1min read

The Audi maintenance schedule calls for only a few lubrication tasks on the body. However, experience shows that periodic lubrication helps keep certain body areas moving freely, areas that commonly squeak, stick, wear, or rust. Observe the following basic rule: hinges with narrow gaps, into which grease penetrates with difficulty, are best lubricated with oil or lubricating spray. Exposed sliding surfaces are best lubricated with multi-purpose grease, because these greases adhere better.

Doors and Tailgate
PROCEDURE

Audi door hinges require no maintenance. However, it is advisable to lubricate them occasionally with a small amount of oil.

Lubricate the small levers of the door checks on the lower door hinge with multi-purpose grease.

The door locks, tailgate or liftgate locks can be treated with lubricating aerosol spray.

The tailgate hinges can be sprayed with a small amount of oil.

Lock Cylinders
At least before the start of the cold season, spray the lock slot with an insulating and rust-removing spray.

It lubricates, displaces moisture, and protects against rust and freezing in winter.

Hood
Apply a small amount of multi-purpose grease where the cable exits the sheath, and draw the cable into the sheath by repeatedly pressing the lever. If your vehicle has a 5-cylinder engine, the radiator cap must be removed to perform this operation.

PROCEDURE

Lubricate the hood locking pins and both hood release levers with a small amount of multi-purpose grease or apply lubricating spray.

Lubricate the hood hinges and latch with oil or lubricating spray.

Sunroof
PROCEDURE
