Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement

The drain plug can only be reached after removing the engine compartment undertray. A box-end wrench is best for loosening it.

This is how the oil filter (1) is unscrewed using the strap wrench (2). The illustration shows the filter of a 4-cylinder engine.

PROCEDURE

Change the oil only with the engine warm! If necessary, drive the vehicle briefly to warm up the engine.

Raise the Audi 80 if possible and secure it in a horizontal position (on support stands!) or drive it onto a lift.

Remove the engine compartment lower cover. Refer to the body section.

Place a suitable container under the oil pan.

Remove the oil drain plug using a ring wrench. Allow the oil to drain. Caution, the oil is hot!
If the vehicle was raised at the front only, lower the vehicle again to drain the used oil completely. Make sure the used oil container is not damaged or knocked over.

Place a used oil container under the oil filter.

Unscrew the oil filter using the strap wrench. If the filter is very tight, pierce the filter wall with a screwdriver (caution, hot oil will flow out) and turn the filter.

Lightly lubricate the sealing ring of the new oil filter with grease. Do not use oil for this, as it can easily be mistaken for leaking oil during visual inspection.

Install the oil filter by hand, without using any tools.

Wipe the oil filler cap threads clean and dry and install it with a new sealing ring. Be careful not to damage the guide threads in the oil pan.

Fill with oil (see table).

Start the engine and check for oil leaks.
