Technical Description

Checking the ATF level in the automatic transmission

~2min read

Regular Checking

The automatic transmission is filled with a synthetic fluid called Automatic Transmission Fluid. This fluid serves as a lubricant and also controls the hydraulic pressure in the transmission. For it to meet the requirements, ATF must be approved and labeled "Dexron" (followed by a control number). Incorrectly selected fluid can cause transmission damage that cannot be repaired!

PROCEDURE

When checking, ATF must be at operating temperature, which corresponds approximately to driving 10 km. The fluid level changes depending on temperature. When cold, the level being checked is too low; after a long drive it is too high.

Apply the parking brake, move the selector lever to position "P", and let the engine run at idle.

Pull out the ATF dipstick, located at the rear left of the engine in the direction of travel. It can be identified by its handle. Wipe it only with a completely dry, lint-free cloth.

Insert the dipstick and pull it out again. The fluid level between the upper and lower marks is 0.2 L.

Clear ATF must be visible between the two marks. The marking on the dipstick tip is intended only for measuring the fill quantity when ATF is replaced.

Previously, ATF was always transparent and light red in color. Now a fluid is used that may turn black-brown during operation.

If the ATF on the dipstick smells burnt, there is damage to the transmission.

If the fluid level is too low, do not simply add ATF; the transmission must be checked for leaks. Necessary sealing work must be entrusted to a workshop.

A fluid level that is too high may be caused by damage to the seal between the planetary gear and the final drive.

Check the oil level in the final drive.

If there is too little oil there, both units must be resealed at a workshop and the ATF replaced.

If the oil level in the final drive is normal, excess ATF is simply drained from the automatic transmission. A fluid level that is too high can also cause transmission damage.
