Removing the Brake Shoes
PROCEDURE
Remove the brake drum.
Using pliers, compress the spring washer of the brake shoe hold-down, turn it 90° (holding the retaining pin at the rear of the backing plate so it does not rotate with it), and remove the hold-downs, then remove the springs.
Disconnect the adjusting wedge return spring.
Detach the brake shoe from the lower anchor and the wheel cylinder piston.
Pull the adjusting wedge out of the pushrod.
Attach the main spring to the pushrod and brake shoe. See the illustrations for correct spring installation.
Install the brake shoe on the pushrod, and insert the adjusting wedge from above. Its projection faces toward the brake shoe.
Install the parking brake lever of the trailing shoe into the pushrod projection, and hook the upper return spring.
Attach the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever while the brake pads are not yet secured.
