Checking brake fluid level

Brake fluid reservoir (2):
1 – level marks, connection for warning lamp below;
3 – cap.
Regular check
PROCEDURE
The warning indicator on the instrument panel will alert you to a brake fluid level that is too low on the Audi 80, but a visual check must still not be omitted:
Open the hood and, if necessary, clean the brake fluid reservoir with a cloth.
In the transparent reservoir, the brake fluid level should be between the "min" and "max" marks. In this case, everything is in order.
Fluid level too low?
If the disc brake pads have already worn somewhat, the fluid level is most likely near the lower mark; if they are new, it will most likely be higher. This is completely normal, because the disc brake pistons, which extend further when the pads are worn, leave a larger volume in the caliper cylinders that is filled with brake fluid.
A critical situation arises if the brake fluid level in the reservoir drops below the minimum mark. Since brake fluid does not evaporate or get consumed, this means there is a leak somewhere in the system. Therefore, the cause and location of the leak must be found immediately, before the brake pedal goes to the floor. Simply topping up the fluid in the reservoir is self-deception!
