Parking Brake Lever Free Travel Check

~1min read

PROCEDURE

The parking brake should engage from the third ratchet notch of the lever.

With the lever held at the fourth tooth, the rear wheels must be locked.

On models with rear disc brakes, the free travel depends directly on the operation of the automatic adjuster.

In general: if the lever travel is longer than normal, this indicates worn rear brake pads or stretched brake cables. It also indicates that the parking brake has been applied very hard every time the vehicle was parked.

Parking brake adjustment is usually required only after replacing a brake cable or the rear disc brake pads.
