Brake System

Brake Component Inspection

~1min read

Routine Inspection

PROCEDURE

First, perform a full brake application at walking speed.

Even with ABS, the tire marks on the road will show whether the brakes are applying evenly.

Perform the same check with the parking brake.

To check brake performance at higher speeds, you need a straight, level road.

Now brake gently at first, then firmly until the vehicle stops, from a speed of approximately 50 km/h, with the steering wheel released but ready to grasp it immediately.

If the vehicle pulls to one side, either the brakes or the chassis components are faulty. See the troubleshooting list at the end of this chapter for causes.

Try coasting on a slight incline to determine how freely the wheels turn.

After the test drive, check by hand:
Is one wheel hub or brake disc noticeably hotter than the other?
Possible causes include a seized disc brake caliper, dragging rear drum brakes (where fitted), or a faulty wheel hub bearing.
