Parking Brake System Adjustment

Parking brake adjustment. Turn the adjusting nut (1) on the threaded section (2) of the brake cable to tension the brake cables to the wheels. The illustration shows approximately the middle of the underbody.

The parking brake is correctly adjusted when the brake operating lever (2) lifts slightly off the stop (1).
Because of the automatic adjusters fitted to models with both rear drum and rear disc brakes, the parking brake system needs to be adjusted only after work on the parking brake mechanism or after replacing the brake pads.
PROCEDURE
Raise the rear of the vehicle on both sides and support it securely.
Models with rear drum brakes: release the parking brake.
Unscrew the adjusting nut fully to the end of the threaded rod.
Depress the brake pedal firmly once.
Raise the parking brake lever two ratchet notches (two clicks).
Tighten the adjusting nut until both wheels can be turned by hand only with great difficulty.
Release the parking brake and check that the rear wheels turn freely.
Models with rear disc brakes: perform the adjustment.
Tighten the adjusting nut until both parking brake operating levers at the left and right brake calipers lift slightly off the stop. An assistant must check this.
Now loosen the adjusting nut by two turns.
To check, press the parking brake operating lever against the left and right caliper levers in turn, up to the respective stop. If the lever on the other wheel's caliper moves in the same way, the brake cables are tensioned too tightly.
In this case, loosen the brake cable adjusting nut until both levers are close to the stop.
Apply and then release the parking brake again; check the free travel of the rear wheels.
