Air conditioning system operation
An air conditioning system is also available as optional equipment for the Fiat Bravo/Brava.
The air conditioning system consists of refrigerant compressor, condenser, expansion valve, evaporator, receiver/drier and pressure lines.
The refrigerant compressor is driven by the crankshaft via a V-belt or multi-V belt.
It increases the pressure in the refrigerant circuit to a maximum of 30 bar, causing the refrigerant gas to heat up. In the condenser, the air flowing past absorbs the heat (cooling air, remains outside the vehicle); this cools the hot refrigerant gas and it condenses. The refrigerant becomes liquid.
It then flows, still under high pressure, through an expansion valve, which reduces the pressure. The refrigerant then evaporates in the circuit and at the same time cools down considerably again. In the evaporator, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the air flowing past. This cools the air.
This cooler air is then directed into the vehicle interior. The heat absorbed in the evaporator turns the refrigerant into gas, which is routed at low pressure to the compressor. The cycle then begins again. The receiver/drier serves as an expansion vessel and refrigerant reservoir.
Warning: Repairs to the air conditioning system are not described. Apart from maintenance (tensioning the compressor drive belt / replacing the cabin air filter), all work on the air conditioning system should be carried out by a specialist workshop. In particular, the refrigerant circuit must not be opened, as refrigerant can cause frostbite on contact with skin.
