The windshield wiper and washer system of the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) ensures clear visibility in all weather conditions. This section describes the various wiper programs, the function of the rain sensor, and the high-pressure cleaning of the headlamps, which is activated automatically to remove dirt. It also provides information on correct use of the systems in winter to prevent damage from frozen wiper blades. The importance of sufficient washer fluid and the function of the heated washer nozzles is also highlighted.

The windshield wiper and washer system cleans the windshield and rear window. The headlamps are cleaned with a high-pressure washer system.

Single wipe

Move the lever up and release it to perform one wipe cycle.

Intermittent Operation

Use the thumbwheel to set the number of wipe cycles per time unit in intermittent operation.

Continuous wiping

The windshield wipers operate at high speed.

IMPORTANT

Before activating the windshield wipers in winter, make sure the wiper blades are not frozen to the glass and, if necessary,

remove snow or ice from the windshield.

Rain sensor*

The windshield wipers are activated automatically by the rain sensor, which detects the amount of water on the windshield. The sensitivity of the rain sensor can be adjusted with the thumbwheel.

When the rain sensor is activated, an indicator lamp in the rain sensor button and the rain sensor symbolare shown in the instrument cluster.

Activating and adjusting sensitivity

To activate the rain sensor, the engine must be running or the transponder key must be in position I or II, and the windshield wiper lever must be in position 0 or in the single-wipe position.

Activate the rain sensor by pressing the rain sensor button. The windshield wipers perform one wipe cycle.

If the lever is moved up, the windshield wipers perform additional wipe cycles.

Turn the thumbwheel up for higher sensitivity and down for lower sensitivity. (When the thumbwheel is turned up, an additional wipe cycle is performed.)

Deactivate

Deactivate the rain sensor by pressing the rain sensor buttonor by moving the lever down to another wiper program.

The rain sensor is deactivated automatically when the transponder key is removed from the ignition lock or five minutes after the engine is switched off.

IMPORTANT

The windshield wipers may start moving and be damaged in a car wash. Deactivate the rain sensor while the vehicle is running, or switch it off with the transponder key in position I or II. The symbol in the instrument cluster and the lamp in the button go out.

Cleaning the windshield

Pull the lever toward the steering wheel to start the windshield and headlamp washer system.

After releasing the lever, the windshield wipers perform a few more wipe cycles and the headlamps are cleaned.

Heated washer nozzles*

The washer nozzles are heated automatically in cold weather to prevent the washer fluid from freezing.

High-pressure headlamp washing*

The high-pressure headlamp washer system uses large amounts of washer fluid.

To save fluid, the headlamps are cleaned automatically with every fifth windshield wipe cycle.

Reduced washing operation

When approx. 1 liter of washer fluid remains in the reservoir and the message that washer fluid needs topping up appears in the instrument cluster, the washer fluid supply to the headlights is switched off to give priority to windshield cleaning and visibility.
