Instrument cluster - meaning of indicator symbols
The indicator symbols in the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) inform the driver about the status of important systems and active functions. This section describes the meaning of individual symbols, from the rear fog light to the Eco mode, and explains how they contribute to safety. It also covers the correct response when warning symbols illuminate, so that you can act appropriately in an emergency. This helps the driver operate the vehicle safely and efficiently at all times.
The indicator symbols alert the driver that a function is activated, that a system is operating, that a fault has occurred or that something is missing.
Indicator symbols

Fault in ABL system
The symbol illuminates if a fault has occurred in the ABL (Active Bending Lights) function.
Exhaust emission control system
If the symbol illuminates after starting the engine, this may indicate a fault in the vehicle's exhaust emission control system. Drive to a workshop for inspection. Volvo recommends that you contact a Volvo Retailer.
Fault in ABS system
If the symbol illuminates, the system is out of operation. The regular brake system continues to work, but without the ABS function.
- Stop in a safe place and switch off the engine.
- Restart the engine.
- If the symbol remains illuminated, drive to a workshop to have the ABS system checked. Volvo recommends that you contact a Volvo Retailer.
Rear fog light on
This symbol illuminates when the rear fog light is switched on.
Stability Control
A flashing symbol indicates that the stability control is active. If the symbol illuminates continuously, a fault has occurred in the system.
Stability control, Sport mode
Sport mode allows a more active driving experience. The system detects whether accelerator pedal input, steering wheel movements and cornering are more active than during normal driving, and then permits controlled oversteer of the rear of the vehicle up to a certain level before intervening and stabilizing the vehicle. The symbol illuminates when Sport mode is activated.
Glow plug system (diesel engine)
The symbol illuminates when the engine is being preheated. Preheating is normally required due to low temperatures.
Low fuel level in tank
If the symbol illuminates, the fuel level is too low. Refuel immediately.
Information, read display text
The information symbol illuminates when a deviation is detected in one of the systems in the vehicle. At the same time, a text message is shown in the information display.
The message text is hidden with the OK button, see Using the menus - Instrument cluster, or disappears automatically after some time (depending on the function shown). The information symbol may also illuminate in combination with other symbols.
CAUTIONIf a service message illuminates, the symbol and the message can be hidden with the OK button, or they will disappear automatically after some time.
High beam on
The symbol illuminates when the headlight flasher is used and the high beam is switched on.
Left/right turn signals
When the hazard warning lights are used, both turn signal symbols flash.
Eco function on
The symbol illuminates when the Eco function is activated.
Start/Stop
The symbol illuminates when the engine has been stopped automatically.
Tire pressure monitoring system
The symbol illuminates when tire pressure is low or if a fault occurs in the tire pressure monitoring system.
Check - doors not closed
If one of the doors is not properly closed, the information or warning symbol illuminates and at the same time an explanatory graphic appears in the information display.
Stop the vehicle in a safe place immediately and close the open door.
If the vehicle is driven at a speed of less than approx. 7 km/h, the information symbol illuminates.
If the vehicle is driven at a speed of more than approx. 7 km/h, the warning symbol illuminates.
If the hood10 is not properly closed, the warning symbol illuminates and at the same time an explanatory graphic appears in the information display. Stop the vehicle in a safe place immediately and close the hood.
If the trunk lid is not properly closed, the information symbol illuminates and at the same time an explanatory graphic appears in the information display.
Stop the vehicle in a safe place immediately and close the trunk lid.
