The interior lighting of the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) offers a range of setting options to light the interior as needed. Whether reading lamps, roof lighting or vanity mirror lighting, this section shows how all lamps are operated and how the automatic interior lighting works. It also presents the follow-me-home lighting, which makes it easier to get in and out safely in the dark. The section also explains how the headlamp light pattern can be adjusted for right-hand or left-hand traffic to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic.

Interior lighting

The interior lights are switched on or off using the controls above the front and rear seats.

Switch in the roof console for front reading lamps and interior lighting.

  1. Reading lamp, left side
  2. Reading lamp, right side
  3. Interior lighting

All interior lighting can be switched on or off manually within 30 minutes after:

  • the engine has been switched off and the electrical system has been set to ignition position 0
  • the vehicle has been unlocked but the engine has not yet been started.

Front roof lamp

The front reading lamps are switched on and off by pressing the respective button in the overhead console.

Rear Interior Lamp

Hintere Deckenbeleuchtung
Rear interior lamp.

The lamps are switched on and off by pressing the respective button.

Entry lighting

The entry lamps (and the interior lamp) switch on and off when a side door is opened or closed.

Glove Compartment Lamp

The glove compartment lamp switches on and off when the glove compartment is opened or closed.

Vanity Mirror Lamp

The vanity mirror lamp switches on and off when the mirror is opened and closed.

Automatic Interior Lighting

The interior lighting button can be set to three positions:

  • Off - right side pressed in, automatic interior lighting is deactivated.
  • Neutral position - automatic interior lighting is activated.
  • On - left side pressed in, interior lighting is switched on.

Neutral position

When the button is in the neutral position, the interior lighting switches on and off automatically as follows.

The interior lighting switches on for 30 seconds when:

  • the vehicle is unlocked with the transponder key or the key blade, see Transponder Key - Functions or Removable Key Blade - Unlocking the Door
  • the engine is switched off and the electrical system has been set to key position 0.

The interior lighting switches off when:

  • the engine is started
  • the vehicle is locked.

The interior lighting switches on for two minutes when one of the doors is open.

If a lamp is switched on manually and the vehicle is locked, it switches off automatically after two minutes.

Ambient Lighting*

When the conventional interior lighting is off and the engine is running, several light-emitting diodes, including one in the overhead lighting, provide soft light to enhance the atmosphere while driving. In darkness, the lighting also makes it easier to see objects in the storage compartments, etc. When the vehicle is locked, this lighting switches off shortly after the normal interior lighting.

The brightness is adjusted with the thumbwheel on the light switch.

* Option/accessory. For more information, see "Introduction".

Follow-Me-Home Lighting Duration

Approach lighting includes low beams, parking lights, the exterior mirror lamps, the license plate lamps, the interior ceiling lamp and the entry lamps.

Some of the exterior lighting can remain on after the vehicle is locked, so it can be used as follow-me-home lighting.

  1. Remove the transponder key from the ignition lock.
  2. Move the left-hand steering column lever towards the steering wheel to its end position and release it. The function is activated in the same way as the headlight flasher, see High Beam/Low Beam.
  3. Leave the vehicle and lock the door.

When the function has been activated, the low beams, parking lights, exterior mirror lamps, license plate lamps, interior ceiling lamp and entry lamps come on.

The period for which the approach lighting stays on can be set in the MY CAR menu system, see MY CAR.

Headlights - adjust light pattern

The headlight beam pattern can be changed from right-hand traffic to left-hand traffic to prevent dazzling oncoming traffic.

Lichtmuster Rechtsverkehr.
Right-hand traffic beam pattern.

Active xenon headlights*

Regler zur Einstellung des Lichtmusters.
Beam pattern adjustment control.

  1. Normal position - the beam pattern is set correctly for the country in which the vehicle was delivered.
  2. Adjusted position - intended for the reversed beam pattern.
WARNING

Because the xenon lamp is powered by a high-voltage unit, handle the headlight with great care.

The country in which the vehicle was delivered determines whether the normal position is intended for right-hand or left-hand traffic.

Example 1

If a vehicle delivered in Sweden is to be driven in the United Kingdom, the headlights must be switched to the adjusted position, see previous illustration.

Example 2

A vehicle delivered in the United Kingdom is intended for left-hand traffic and is driven there with the headlights in the normal position, see previous illustration.

Halogen Headlights

On halogen headlights, the beam pattern is adjusted by covering the headlight lens. The quality of the beam pattern is slightly reduced.

Covering the Headlights

1. The templates A and B for left-hand drive vehicles, or C and D for right-hand drive vehicles, are shown in the later section "Templates for Halogen Headlights". The templates are shown at a scale of 1:2. Enlarge the templates to 200 %, for example on a copier with an enlargement function:

  • A = LHD Right (left-hand drive, right lens)
  • B = LHD Left (left-hand drive, left lens)
  • C = RHD Right (right-hand drive, right lens)
  • D = RHD Left (right-hand drive, left lens)

2. Transfer the templates onto a self-adhesive, waterproof material and cut them out.

3. Start from the design lines on the headlamp lenses, see dashed line in the following illustration. Using the illustration and the dimensions in the list below, place the self-adhesive templates at the correct distance from the respective design line:

  • A = LHD Right - approx. 86 mm
  • B = LHD Left - approx. 40 mm
  • C = RHD Right - 0 mm
  • D = RHD Left - approx. 96 mm

The well-designed interior and exterior lighting of the Volvo S80 (2nd gen) provides a harmonious ambience and optimal visibility in all situations. From ceiling lighting to puddle lighting, all elements are designed for safety and comfort.

A particular highlight is the ability to adjust the headlamp beam pattern for left-hand or right-hand traffic, which makes the S80 flexible for international use.

FAQ

How do I set the beam pattern for other countries?
On xenon headlamps, the beam pattern control can be switched; on halogen headlamps, adjustment is made using special covers.

How is the interior lighting controlled automatically?
The interior lighting switches on automatically when the vehicle is unlocked, when a door is open, or when the engine is switched off, and switches off again after the vehicle is locked.
