The exterior mirrors of the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) can be adjusted electrically, folded in, and heated when needed. This section explains operation, the tilt-when-reversing function, and the option of saving settings. It also covers the electric heating of the windows and mirrors, which provides clear visibility in cold weather. The interior mirror is presented as well, with notes on manual and automatic dimming and the correct use of the sensors for optimal glare protection.

Exterior mirrors

The position of the exterior mirrors is adjusted with the adjustment lever in the driver's door control panel.

Adjustment

  1. Press the L button for the left mirror or the R button for the right mirror. The lamp in the button lights up.
  2. Adjust the mirror with the adjustment lever in the center.
  3. Press the L or R button again. The lamp goes out.
WARNING

Both mirrors are wide-angle mirrors that ensure optimal visibility. Objects in the mirror may appear farther away than they actually are.

Saving settings22

The mirror and driver's seat settings can be saved separately for each transponder key*, see Transponder Key - Personalization*

Tilting the mirror when reversing22

The mirror can be tilted to show the curb, for example when parallel parking.

- Engage reverse gear and press the L or R button.

When reverse gear is disengaged, the mirror automatically returns to its original position after approx. 10 seconds, or sooner if the L or R button is pressed.

* Option/accessory. For more information, see "Introduction".

Automatic tilting of the mirror when reversing22

When reverse gear is engaged, the mirror automatically tilts to show the curb, for example when parking. When reverse gear is disengaged, the mirror automatically returns to its original position after a short time.

This function can be activated or deactivated in the MY CAR menu system, see MY CAR.

Automatic folding when locking22

When the vehicle is locked or unlocked with the transponder key, the mirrors automatically fold in or out.

This function can be activated or deactivated in the MY CAR menu system, see MY CAR.

Return to neutral position

Mirrors that have been moved out of position due to external factors must be returned electrically to the neutral position so that electric folding works correctly:

  1. Fold the mirrors in using the L and R buttons.
  2. Fold the mirrors out using the L and R buttons.
  3. Repeat the above procedure if necessary.

The mirrors are now returned to their neutral position.

Electrically foldable exterior mirrors*

The mirrors can be folded in when parking or driving in tight spaces:

  1. Press the L and R buttons simultaneously (ignition position must be at least I).
  2. Release the buttons after approx. one second.

The mirrors remain automatically in the fully folded position.

Fold the mirrors out. To do so, press L and R simultaneously. The mirrors remain automatically in the fully unfolded position.

Automatic lighting and puddle lighting

The mirror lights are activated when puddle lighting or approach lighting is selected.

Windows and mirrors - electric heating

Electric heating is used to quickly remove ice and condensation from the windshield, rear window, and exterior mirrors.

Windshield*, rear window, and exterior mirror heating

Windschutzscheiben-*, Heckscheibenund Außenspiegelheizung
  1. Windshield Heater
  2. Rear window and exterior mirror heating

This function is used to remove ice and condensation from the windshield, rear window, and exterior mirrors.

Press the respective button to start the heating. The lamp in the button indicates that the function is activated. Switch off the heating as soon as the ice or condensation has been removed to avoid unnecessarily draining the battery. However, the function switches off automatically after some time.

The rear window heater then switches on and off automatically as long as the outside temperature is below +7 °C.

CAUTION

When Eco mode is activated, the rear window heater does not switch on and off automatically. It stays off even when the outside temperature is below +7 °C.

For the Eco function, see ECO*

See also Defogging and defrosting the windshield.

Condensation or ice on the exterior mirrors and rear window is removed automatically when the vehicle is started at outside temperatures below +7 °C. Automatic defrosting can be selected in the MY CAR menu system, see MY CAR.

Interior mirror

The interior mirror can be dimmed using a control on the lower edge of the mirror. Alternatively, the rear-view mirror dims automatically.

  1. Dimming lever

Manual dimming

If strong light from behind hits the mirror, it can be reflected in the rear-view mirror and dazzle the driver. Use the dimming lever to dim the mirror when light from traffic behind the vehicle is disturbing you:

  1. To dim the mirror, move the lever toward the interior.
  2. To return to the normal position, move the lever toward the windshield.

Automatic dimming*

If strong light from behind hits the rear-view mirror, it dims automatically.

The manual dimming controls are not fitted on mirrors with automatic dimming.

The rear-view mirror contains two sensors, one facing forward and one facing rearward, which work together to detect and eliminate glare. The forward-facing sensor detects the ambient light, while the rearward-facing sensor detects the light from the headlamps of following vehicles.

CAUTION

If the sensors are covered, for example by parking tickets, transponders, sun visors or objects on the seats or parcel shelf, so that light cannot reach them, the dimming function of the rear-view mirror is restricted.

Only rear-view mirrors with automatic dimming can be equipped with a compass.
