ENGINE STARTING
General recommendations. Before starting the engine, move the gear selector lever to the neutral position and apply the parking brake. Depress the clutch pedal; the starter should only crank the engine. As soon as the engine starts, release the key to its original position. The starter should disengage.
Starting a cold engine may be accompanied by increased noise for a short time, caused by insufficient initial oil pressure in the hydraulic system. This is normal and no cause for concern.
Do not warm up the engine while the vehicle is stationary. Drive off immediately! Until the engine has warmed up, do not allow high engine speeds and avoid driving at full throttle.
Towing the vehicle over a long distance is not permitted when the catalytic converter is hot. Unburned fuel may enter the catalytic converter, ignite there and damage it.
Gasoline engines. Engines of this type are equipped with a fuel injection system which, depending on operating conditions and outside air temperature, automatically calculates and supplies optimally metered portions of the air-fuel mixture.
To start the engine, lightly depress the accelerator pedal and engage the starter. Do not release the accelerator pedal during starting.
If the engine does not start within 10 seconds, stop cranking and try again after half a minute.
If the engine still does not start, the fuse of the electric fuel pump may have blown.
Diesel engines. Glow plug preheating
The engine is equipped with a glow plug preheating system. The time required to reach the operating glow temperature is indicated by the warning lamp.
Cold start accelerator / increased idle speed during cold start *
Cold engine starting is assisted by a special accelerator device built into the high-pressure fuel pump.
To activate it, pull the knob to the right of the steering column toward you.
This cable can also be used to adjust the idle speed, thereby reducing engine vibration during starting.
Cold engine start. Regardless of air temperature, pull the accelerator cable fully toward you.
Turn the ignition key to position 2; the glow plug indicator lamp should light up. As soon as the operating glow temperature is reached, it will go out.
To avoid excessive battery discharge, switch off all major electrical consumers before activating the glow plug system.
As soon as the indicator lamp goes out, start the engine. Do not press the accelerator while starting. If the engine starts with uneven firing, assist it with the starter, but for no more than 30 seconds.
If the engine does not start, wait half a minute, reactivate the glow plug system and try again. If it still does not start, the glow plug system fuse may have blown.
Once the engine has warmed up to operating temperature, return the idle speed accelerator cable to its original position. If the engine vibrates excessively, use this same cable to adjust the corresponding idle speed and eliminate the vibration.
Starting a warm engine. If the glow plug temperature indicator lamp does not light up, the warm engine can be started. Do not pull the accelerator cable and do not press the accelerator pedal.
