Checking the Windshield Wiper Motor
The windshield wiper motor is located in the cowl area under the windshield. To check the motor, remove the cowl cover.
Terminal Designations
The motor terminals are designated as follows:
a) Terminal 31, ground connection (general ground designation in the vehicle)
b) Terminal 53 supplies voltage for the first wiper speed.
c) Terminal 53a supplies (+) voltage for the wiper park position.
The motor receives voltage through the moving contact until the wiper reaches the park position after the driver turns off the wipers.
d) Terminal 53b supplies voltage for the second wiper speed.
e) Terminal 53e provides motor braking on return after switch-off, so that the wiper does not overrun the park position.
Checking
First determine whether the fault is in the motor or in the power supply.
CHECKING
1. Disconnect the wiper motor connector.
2. Using two jumper wires, apply (+) and (-) voltage from the battery to the windshield wiper motor:
a) One wire from the battery positive terminal to terminal 53 or 53b.
b) The other wire from the battery negative terminal to terminal 31 of the wiper motor.
3. Depending on the connection, the motor should now run at first or second speed. If the motor does not run, the motor or the corresponding speed circuit is faulty. Remove the motor; refer to Windshield Wiper Motor Removal and Installation.
