Control Instruments

On the BMW 5 Series, the control instruments are located in the instrument panel cluster. The instrument panel cluster must be removed if, for example, the instrument illumination bulbs need to be replaced. If individual instruments are damaged, the entire instrument panel cluster must be replaced, as it cannot be disassembled.

Instrument Panel Cluster Removal and Installation

REMOVAL

1. Lower the steering column fully and extend it.
2. Remove the wood trim covers on the left and right of the steering column.
3. Remove the cover. To do this, remove the three mounting screws from below.

4. Remove the three screws at the top and remove the bezel. Disconnect the electrical connector of the fog lamp switch and hang up the bezel cover. If necessary, disconnect the electrical connector of the headlamp switch. In this case, the light will come on and the warning indicator will illuminate. To prevent this, remove the corresponding fuse.

* Depending on the version, the cover may be secured with two screws at the top and bottom and additionally locked at the top.

5. Remove the two mounting screws and tilt down the instrument panel cluster.

6. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove it. To do so, open the clip and pull it away from the cable.

INSTALLATION

1. Connect the electrical connector and secure it with the clip. Make sure the clip is securely locked.
2. Insert the instrument panel cluster into the opening and secure it with the screws.
3. Connect the light switch electrical connector.
4. Install the cover and secure it with the screws.
5. Reinstall the wood trim panels.
6. Return the steering column to its normal position.

Instrument Panel Cluster Bulb Replacement

PROCEDURE

1. Remove the instrument panel cluster.

2. Disconnect the multi-pin electrical connector of the electronic unit after opening the clips.

3. Remove the electronic unit from the instrument panel cluster. To do so, unlock it, slide the electronic unit to the side and remove it.

* If the electronic unit is being replaced, it must be coded at a dealership service center.

4. Turn the bulb socket with the faulty bulb counterclockwise and remove it. Replace the bulb with the socket.

5. Install the electronic unit back into the instrument panel cluster.
