Engine cooling troubleshooting

~1min read

Fault: coolant temperature is too high, the gauge is in the red zone or the warning lamp lights up.

Cause Remedy
Insufficient coolant in the circuit. The coolant reservoir must be filled above the "MIN" mark.

Check the cooling system for leaks. Coolant thermostat does not open. Check whether the upper coolant hose at the radiator becomes warm.

If not, remove the thermostat and check it; replace if necessary. V-belt tension for coolant pump too low. Check and adjust the tension (applies to 1.6 L engine only). Coolant temperature gauge display faulty. Check the sender/gauge unit. Reservoir cap faulty. Check the cooling system and carry out a pressure test of the cap. Radiator fins dirty. Remove the radiator and blow it out with compressed air from the engine side. Radiator internally clogged by limescale deposits or rust. Radiator only gets warm in the upper section; the lower coolant hose from the radiator does not get warm. Replace the radiator. Radiator fan does not run. Check the fan motor connector for secure fit and good contact.

If necessary, connect an auxiliary cable from the battery to the fan; see also the wiring diagram. Warning: risk of injury from the rotating fan! Check the thermal switch.
