City Safety - Laser sensor. City Safety - Symbols and messages. Collision warning system* 16

~5min read

The laser sensor of the City Safety system in the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) is a precise component that requires special care during maintenance and handling. This section describes safety precautions and the meaning of the warning notices. In addition, the symbols and messages of the system are explained. Tips on how to act in the event of a malfunction help ensure safe use.

City Safety - Laser sensor

The City Safety function contains a sensor that emits laser light (for the location of the sensor, see illustration). In the event of a malfunction or if the laser sensor requires service, contact a qualified workshop. A Volvo Authorized Workshop is recommended. It is essential to follow the prescribed instructions for handling the laser sensor.

The following two labels apply to the laser sensor:

City Safety - Lasersensor

The upper label in the illustration indicates the classification of the laser light:

  • Laser radiation - Do not look into the laser beam with optical instruments - Class 1M laser product.

The lower label in the illustration indicates the physical data of the laser light:

  • IEC 60825-1:1993 + A2:2001. In accordance with the standards of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for laser products, except for deviations resulting from 'Laser Notice No. 50' dated July 26, 2001.

WARNING

Failure to follow the instructions creates a high risk of eye injury!

  • Never look into the laser sensor (which emits scattered, invisible laser radiation) from a distance of 100 mm or less using magnifying optics such as a magnifying glass, microscope, objective lens or similar optical instruments.
  • Testing, repair, removal, adjustment and/or replacement of laser sensor parts must only be carried out by a qualified workshop. A Volvo Authorized Workshop is recommended.
  • To avoid harmful radiation, do not perform any adjustments or maintenance procedures other than those listed here.
  • During repair, the special workshop information for the laser sensor must be followed.
  • Do not remove the laser sensor (including removal of the lenses). A removed laser sensor corresponds to Class 3B lasers according to standard IEC 60825-1. Since Class 3B lasers are not eye-safe, they pose a risk of injury.
  • The connector of the laser sensor must be disconnected from the windshield before removal.
  • The laser sensor must be mounted on the windshield before the sensor connector is connected.
  • The laser sensor also emits laser light with the engine switched off when the transponder key is in position II.

City Safety - Symbols and messages

While City Safety is braking automatically, one or more symbols may light up in the instrument cluster together with a text message. A text message can be hidden by briefly pressing the OK button on the turn signal lever.

Symbol Message Meaning/Action
Automatic braking by City Safety City Safety is braking or has carried out an automatic braking maneuver.
Windshield sensors disturbed. See manual The laser sensor is temporarily out of
operation because it is blocked by something.
  • Remove the object blocking the sensor and/or clean the windshield in front of the sensor.

Collision warning system*16

The "Collision warning system with auto brake and pedestrian and cyclist detection" assists the driver if there is a risk of colliding with a pedestrian, or with a vehicle or cyclist standing or traveling in the same direction ahead.

The "Collision warning system with auto brake and pedestrian and cyclist detection" is activated in situations where the driver should in fact have started braking significantly earlier. For this reason, the function cannot help the driver in every situation.

The "Collision warning system with auto brake and pedestrian and cyclist detection" is activated as late as possible to avoid unnecessary interventions.

The "Collision warning system with auto brake and pedestrian and cyclist detection" can prevent a collision or reduce the severity of the impact.

The "Collision warning system with auto brake and pedestrian and cyclist detection" must not be used to change the driver's way of driving. If the driver relies solely on the collision warning system with auto brake and lets it brake, a collision will sooner or later occur.

Two system levels

Depending on the vehicle equipment, the "Collision warning system with auto brake and pedestrian and cyclist detection" may be available in two versions:

Level 1

The driver is only warned of obstacles ahead by visual and audible signals17. The automatic brake does not intervene; the driver must brake independently.

Level 2

The driver is warned of obstacles ahead by visual and audible signals. The vehicle is braked automatically if the driver does not react within a reasonable time.

IMPORTANT

Maintenance of components of the "Collision warning system with auto brake and pedestrian and cyclist detection" must be carried out without exception in a workshop, preferably an authorized Volvo workshop.

The laser sensor of the City Safety system in the Volvo S80 (2nd gen) works precisely to prevent rear-end collisions at low speeds. Strict safety requirements for maintenance and handling ensure that the function remains reliable. The sensor may only be checked or serviced by qualified specialist workshops.

The symbols and messages in the instrument cluster inform the driver about the status of the system. If the sensor is blocked, a corresponding message appears and the driver is asked to clean the windshield.

In this way, Volvo offers a modern safety concept that combines technical precision with driver responsibility.
