Road Sign Information (RSI)* - Limits. Cruise control*. Cruise control* - Speed control
The limitations of Road Sign Information (RSI) in the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) are similar to the limits of the human eye. This section describes how weather, damaged or obscured signs, and unfavorable positioning can impair the function. The combination of RSI with cruise control is also described. Notes on the safe use of the system and on the driver's responsibility when controlling speed emphasize the importance of attentive driving.
Road Sign Information (RSI)* - Limitations
The Road Sign Information (RSI) function helps the driver remember which speed-related traffic signs the vehicle has passed. The function has the following limitations.
The limitations of the RSI camera sensor are similar to those of the human eye. See the camera sensor limitations for more detailed information.
Signs such as town name signs, which indirectly indicate that a speed limit applies, are not detected by the RSI function.
The following are some examples of conditions that can disrupt the function:
- Faded signs
- Signs on a curve
- Twisted or damaged signs
- Obscured or unfavorably positioned signs
- Signs partially or completely covered by frost, snow and/or dirt.

Cruise control*
The cruise control system (CC - Cruise Control) helps the driver maintain a constant speed, which contributes to a more relaxed driving experience on motorways and long straight country roads.
Overview

Steering wheel buttons and instrument cluster.
- Cruise control - On/Off.
- Standby mode is exited and the stored speed is resumed.
- Standby mode
- Activate and set the speed.
- Selected speed (GREY = standby mode).
- Cruise control active - WHITE symbol (GREY = standby mode).
The driver must always watch the traffic conditions and intervene if cruise control does not maintain the appropriate speed and/or distance.
The driver is ultimately always responsible for operating the vehicle safely.

Cruise control* - Speed control
It is possible to activate, set and change the stored speed.
Activating and setting the speed. To switch on the cruise control system:
- Press the steering wheel button CRUISE (without speed limiter) or
(with speed limiter).> The speed limiter symbol (6) on the instrument cluster lights up - the cruise control system is in standby mode.
To activate the cruise control system:
- At the desired speed, press the SET steering wheel button.
or
press.> The current speed is stored, the indicator (5) on the instrument cluster lights up at the selected speed and symbol (6) changes from GREY to WHITE - the vehicle then maintains the stored speed.
Cruise control cannot be switched on at speeds below 30 km/h.
Changing the stored speed
To change the stored speed, press the steering wheel button
or
briefly or press and hold.
To change in +/- 5 km/h increments:
- Press briefly - each press changes the speed by +/- 5 km/h.
To change in +/- 1 km/h increments:
- Press and hold the button, then release it at the desired speed.
The value reached by the last press is stored.
If the speed is increased with the accelerator pedal before pressing the SET button,
/
the current vehicle speed is stored when the button is pressed.
Temporary acceleration with the accelerator pedal, e.g. when overtaking, does not affect the cruise control setting - the vehicle resumes the last stored speed as soon as the accelerator pedal is released.
CAUTIONIf any of the cruise control buttons is held down for several minutes, the system is locked and switched off.
To reactivate the cruise control, the vehicle must be switched off and the engine restarted.

Like any camera-based system, the Road Sign Information (RSI) in the Volvo S80 (2nd gen) has its limitations. Factors such as unfavourable sign placement, damage or poor visibility can impair its function. The driver therefore always remains responsible for paying attention.
The cruise control also helps to relieve the driver by maintaining a constant speed. It is operated easily via the steering wheel, and the instrument cluster provides clear feedback.
With this, Volvo shows how driver assistance systems can increase comfort and safety, without replacing the driver's responsibility.
