Checking the Windshield Wiper Motor
GENERAL INFORMATION
The windshield wiper motor is located in the cowl compartment under the windshield. To check it, remove the corresponding cover.
Terminal Designation
The wiper motor has the following terminals:
– Terminal 31 is the ground connection (common to all vehicle electrical equipment). – Terminal 53 supplies voltage for the first wiper speed. – Terminal 53a supplies (+) power to the wiper park position.
The motor receives voltage through the brush until the wiper returns to its park position after the driver switches off the wipers.
– Terminal 53b supplies voltage for the second wiper speed (auxiliary winding). – Through terminal 53e the motor is braked on return after switch-off, so that the wiper does not travel past its park position. – Present on some vehicles only: terminal 53c supplies power to the washer pump.
Checking the Wiper Motor
First determine whether the motor is faulty or there is no power supply. Proceed as follows:
PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the multi-pin connector from the wiper motor.
2. Connect 2 auxiliary cables (+) and (–) from the vehicle battery to the wiper motor:
– Connect one cable from the positive battery terminal to terminal 53 or 53b. – Connect the second cable from the negative battery terminal to terminal 31 of the motor.
3. The motor should now run at speed I or II depending on the terminal used. If it does not, the motor or the respective speed stage is faulty. Remove the motor; refer to Removal and Installation of Front Wiper Motor.
