Bleed the power steering
Air in the hydraulic system renders the power steering ineffective. Air can enter the system if the system was opened during repairs, or if leaks have lowered the fluid level in the reservoir so far that the pump draws in air.
Only new hydraulic fluid (ATF oil) may be used to top up or refill. Fiat specification Tutela GL/A, or ATF fluid "Dexron II".
Caution: the hydraulic fluid must not be shaken before filling, as this can cause air bubbles to form. Bleeding
Fill the reservoir with new, clean, bubble-free hydraulic fluid up to the "MAX" mark - 1 / 3 -.
Warning: the oil must be filled slowly to avoid bubble formation.
Start the engine and slowly turn the steering wheel lock to lock three to four times.
Have an assistant watch the fluid level in the reservoir. The fluid level must not drop below the MIN mark - 2 / 4 -; top up with hydraulic fluid if necessary.
Repeat this procedure until no more air bubbles rise in the reservoir.
Check the power steering for leaks. Check the line connections, the rack boots and the valve housing for oil leaking out.
Switch off the engine and check the oil level again; top up the hydraulic fluid if necessary.
