Removing and installing steering wheel
Switch off the ignition.
Disconnect the battery negative (-) cable. Warning: this erases electronic memories, such as engine operating values. Observe the notes in the chapter "Remove and install battery".
Disconnect the negative battery terminal to avoid accidental electrical contact.
Remove the fuse for the airbag system electronic control unit. Then wait approx. 10 minutes until the system capacitor has discharged. For fuses, see page 248.

Unscrew the airbag module from the back through the openings in the steering wheel using an Allen key SW5.

Lift off the airbag module and turn it slightly to the right.
Disconnect the electrical connectors, do not pull on the wires.
Remove the airbag module.
Place the airbag on a soft surface. In the event of accidental deployment, the airbag must be placed with the mechanism facing downward.
The airbag cover must face upward.

Remove the steering wheel nut retaining washer; lift the tabs with a screwdriver.

Unscrew the steering wheel nut, holding the steering wheel by hand.
Mark the position of the steering wheel relative to the steering shaft. Draw a line across the steering wheel and steering shaft with a felt-tip pen.
Pull the steering wheel off the steering shaft. Considerable force may be required, as the steering wheel is quite tight.
Check that the turn signal lever is in the center position, otherwise the cam may be damaged when the steering wheel is installed.
Visually inspect the airbag connection cable for good condition.
Make sure the wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
Position the steering wheel on the combination switch and route the cable on the right side through the slot in the steering wheel.
Install the steering wheel onto the combination switch and center the two "heads" of the clock spring.
Make sure the electrical cables are not pinched.
Slide the steering wheel onto the taper of the steering shaft so that the marks made during removal line up.
Tighten the steering wheel retaining nut to 50 N·m.
Hold the steering wheel while doing so.
Install the airbag module. Connect the airbag multi-connector (yellow) and horn connector (white). The connectors must click into place.
Carefully fit the airbag module and first start one screw without tightening it. Warning: do not apply force to the module if it does not fit easily. Do not use pointed or sharp tools.
Install the second retaining screw, making sure the airbag module is centered on the steering wheel.
Tighten both airbag module screws to 8 N·m.
Make sure the ignition is switched off.
Connect the battery negative cable (-).
Install the fuse for the airbag electronic control unit.
Turn the ignition key to "RUN" and check that the airbag warning lamp goes out after approx. 6 seconds. If not, have the airbag system checked by a workshop.
Set the clock.
If required, enter the radio anti-theft code.
