Variable Assist Power Steering (Speed Sensitive)

~1min read

The Speed Sensitive Power Steering (SSPS) system changes the steering wheel effort depending on vehicle speed.

At low speeds, to make turning and parking easier, this system provides maximum assist.

At high speeds, steering assist is reduced, giving the driver firmer control and helping maintain directional stability of the vehicle.

The SSPS system controls assist by reducing the flow of hydraulic fluid from the pump to the power steering gear as vehicle speed increases.

When the vehicle is stationary, the SSPS system supplies maximum hydraulic fluid flow to the steering gear. As vehicle speed increases, the flow of hydraulic fluid to the steering gear is reduced.

In the event of a malfunction, steering wheel effort increases at low speeds and the SSPS malfunction indicator illuminates.

See “SSPS MALFUNCTION INDICATOR”.
