Citroen C5 Aircross (2017- 2024) - Owner's Manual

Driving tips

~5min read

► Obey the traffic code and stay alert, whatever the traffic conditions.

► Watch your surroundings and keep your hands on the steering wheel so you can react to any situation at all times.

► Drive smoothly, anticipate braking and increase following distances, especially in bad weather.

► Stop the vehicle to carry out operations that require close attention (adjustments, for example).

► Take a break every two hours on a long journey.

Important!

Never leave the engine running in an enclosed space without adequate ventilation. Combustion engines emit toxic exhaust gases, such as carbon monoxide. Risk of poisoning and death! In very severe winter conditions (temperature below -23ºC), let the engine run for 4 minutes before driving, to ensure the proper operation and longevity of the vehicle's mechanical components (engine and gearbox).

Never drive with the parking brake applied. Risk of overheating and damage to the braking system! Never park or leave the engine running on flammable surfaces (for example: dry grass, dead leaves). The exhaust system of the vehicle is very hot, even several minutes after the engine has been switched off. Risk of fire! Never drive over surfaces covered with vegetation (for example: tall grass, accumulated dead leaves, crops, debris), such as a field, a country road overgrown with bushes or a grassy verge.

This vegetation may come into contact with the vehicle's exhaust system or other very hot systems.

Risk of fire! Make sure no objects are left in the passenger compartment that could act as a magnifying glass under the sun's rays and cause a fire. Risk of fire or damage to interior surfaces! Never leave the vehicle unattended with the engine running. If the driver must leave the vehicle with the engine running, apply the parking brake and place the gearbox in neutral or in position N or P (depending on the type of gearbox).

Never leave children unattended inside the vehicle.

Driving on flooded roads

It is strongly recommended not to drive on flooded roads, as this could seriously damage the engine (combustion and/or electric), the gearbox and the vehicle's electrical systems.

Conduite

If the vehicle absolutely must go through a flooded section of road:

► Check that the water depth does not exceed 15 cm, taking into account waves that may be generated by other road users.

► Deactivate the Stop & Start function.

► Drive as slowly as possible without stalling. Do not exceed a speed of 10 km/h under any circumstances.

► Do not stop and do not switch off the engine.

On leaving a flooded road, as soon as road conditions allow, brake lightly several times to dry the brake discs and pads.

If in doubt about the condition of the vehicle, consult a CITROËN dealer or a qualified workshop.

When towing

Towing a trailer places greater stress on the towing vehicle and requires particular attention.

Observe the maximum towable masses.

At altitude: reduce the maximum load by 10% per 1,000 metres of altitude; the thinner air at altitude reduces engine performance.

New vehicle: do not tow a trailer until at least 1,000 kilometres have been covered.

When the outside temperature is high, let the engine run for 1 to 2 minutes after stopping the vehicle to help it cool down.

Before driving

Towball download

► Distribute the load in the trailer so that the heaviest items are as close as possible to the axle, and so that the towball download (at the coupling point of the vehicle and trailer) approaches the maximum permitted, without exceeding it.

Tyres

► Check the tyre pressures of the towing vehicle and the trailer, observing the recommended pressures.

Lighting

► Check the trailer's electrical signalling and the vehicle headlamp beam levelling setting.

If a genuine CITROËN towbar is used, the rear parking assistance is automatically deactivated to prevent the audible signal from being triggered.

While driving

Cooling

On hills, towing a trailer increases the coolant temperature.

The maximum towable load depends on the gradient and the outside temperature. The cooling capacity of the fan does not increase with engine speed.

► Reduce speed and engine speed to limit overheating.

► Keep a constant watch on the coolant temperature.

If this warning lamp and the STOP lamp come on, stop the vehicle and switch off the engine as soon as possible.

Brakes

Using engine braking is recommended to limit brake overheating. Towing a trailer increases the braking distance.

Crosswind

Take into account the increased sensitivity of the vehicle to crosswinds.

Theft protection

Electronic immobilizer

The keys contain a code which must be recognised by the vehicle for the engine to start.

In the event of a fault, indicated by a message being displayed, the vehicle will not start.
