Lane keeping assist

~5min read

For more information, refer to the General Recommendations for driving and manoeuvring aids.

Conduite

This system identifies the lane markings and steers the vehicle within the lane to keep it at the lateral position chosen by the driver.

To do this, the system uses a camera mounted on the upper part of the windshield.

This system is mainly suited to driving on motorways and expressways.

Operating conditions

- Active Adaptive Cruise Control.

- Vehicle speed above 30 km/h.

- Lane delimited by lines on both sides.

- ESC system operational.

- ASR/CDS systems activated.

- No trailer detected.

- No "pancake" type spare wheel in use.

- Vehicle not subject to high lateral acceleration.

- Turn signals off when the system is activated.

Activation / Deactivation

Conduite

► With the Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop&Go function activated, press this button.

The action is confirmed by:

- The green indicator light on the button coming on.

- The icon shown below appearing in the instrument cluster.

In the instrument cluster, the color of the icon depends on the operating status of the system:

(grey color)

At least one of the operating conditions is not met; the system is paused.

(green color)

All operating conditions are met; the system is active.

(orange color)

The system has a malfunction.

If the driver no longer wishes to use the system, they can switch it off by pressing the button again.

The button indicator light goes out and the icon disappears from the instrument cluster.

The function's status is retained when the ignition is switched off.

Steering Control

The driver must hold the steering wheel correctly.

As soon as steering control is activated, the icon turns green: through small steering inputs, the system steers the vehicle and keeps it at the position chosen by the driver within the lane. This position is not necessarily the center of the lane.

The driver feels the steering wheel moving.

At any time, the driver can change the vehicle's position by steering, which suspends the function. The driver positions the vehicle where they want it in the lane. Once they consider the vehicle's position suitable, they keep it there until the function is reactivated.

The system resumes control, regulating on the new position defined.

Pausing / Suspending the System

The driver must intervene whenever they judge that traffic or road conditions require it, by steering, to temporarily suspend the system. Any action on the brake pedal that causes the Adaptive Cruise Control to pause will also pause the system.

If the system detects that the driver is not holding the steering wheel sufficiently, it triggers a series of progressive alerts and then, if the driver does not respond, it switches off.

After a suspension due to prolonged release of the steering hold, it is essential to reactivate the function by pressing the button again.

Automatic Pausing

- ESC intervention.

- Prolonged loss of detection of one of the lane markings. In this case, the Active Lane Departure Warning function may take over, and the system will reactivate as soon as the operating conditions are met again.

Driver-initiated suspension:

- Turn signal activation.

- Driving outside the lane limits.

- Holding the steering wheel too firmly or dynamic action on the steering wheel.

- Action on the brake pedal (pauses the cruise control until it is reactivated) or on the accelerator pedal (suspension for as long as the pedal is pressed).

- Adaptive Cruise Control paused.

- ASR/CDS systems switched off.

Driving situations and associated warnings

The tables below describe the warnings related to the main driving situations.

The actual display order of these warnings may differ.

Operating limits

The system may issue a warning when the vehicle is driven along a long straight road with a smooth surface, even if the driver believes they are holding the steering wheel correctly.

The system may not operate, or may generate inappropriate steering corrections, in the following situations:

- Poor visibility conditions (insufficient road lighting, snowfall, rain, fog).

- Glare (headlights of an oncoming vehicle, low sun, reflections on wet road, tunnel exit, alternating light and shadow).

- The area of the windshield in front of the camera is dirty, fogged, iced, snow-covered, damaged or obscured by a sticker.

- Road markings are worn, partially covered (snow, mud) or multiple (roadworks, surface patches).

- Driving through a tight bend.

- Winding roads.

- Presence of tar joints on the road surface.

Risk of unwanted activations

The system must be deactivated in the following situations:

- When driving with a space-saver spare wheel.

- When towing a trailer or carrying a bicycle rack on the towbar, especially with a trailer that is not connected or not approved.

- Unfavourable weather conditions.

- Driving on low-grip road surfaces (risk of aquaplaning, snow, black ice).

- In roadworks and toll zones.

- Driving on high-speed circuits.

- Driving on a roller dynamometer.

Malfunction

In the event of a malfunction, the Service warning light and this symbol (orange) illuminate in the instrument panel, together with a message and an audible signal.

Have it checked by a CITROËN dealer or a qualified workshop.
