Valve Service
Due to the complexity of the work and the need for specialized equipment, valve service, valve guide and valve seat work is best left to an automotive repair shop.
The vehicle owner can perform such procedures as disassembling the head, initial cleaning, and inspecting the condition of the valve train components. The head should then be reassembled and taken to a repair shop for professional service. This usually gives a clear picture of the work required and allows a preliminary list of replacement parts to be prepared.
Shop technicians will remove the valves and valve springs from the head and perform the necessary repair or replace worn components (valves, valve seats, valve guides, springs, spring retainers and valve keepers). Valve stem seals must always be replaced. After assembly, the valve spring installed height will be checked. If necessary, the technicians will resurface the head to restore the flatness of its mating surface.
After professional head repair, the head is usually in like-new condition. Before installing the head on the engine, clean it thoroughly again, removing all metal shavings, abrasive residue and other small debris from all cavities and passages. Blow out all passages and holes with compressed air (wear safety glasses).
