Final Crankshaft Installation
PROCEDURE
1. Carefully install the crankshaft into the engine. Clean the bearing surfaces in the block and evenly apply a thin layer of molybdenum-based engine assembly lubricant. Do not forget to lubricate the thrust washers.
Avoid getting lubricant on the back of the bearing shells!
2. Make sure the crankshaft journals are perfectly clean, then lubricate the journal surfaces that contact the seals with the same lubricant and carefully lower the crankshaft into the block.
3. Clean and lubricate the bearing shell surfaces in the block and caps.
4. With the block turned upside down, install the piston and connecting rod assemblies (see the section Installation of Piston and Connecting Rod Assemblies and Checking Connecting Rod Bearing Operating Clearance).
ON 4-cylinder engines, install the main bearing caps and tighten the bolts without installing the bridge. Tighten the bolts to approximately 14 ÷ 27 N·m (if the bolts are too long to tighten the caps alone, install washers under the bolt heads). Seating the caps will help hold the crankshaft in place while installing the piston and connecting rod assemblies. Then remove the caps again and proceed to step 5.
5. Install the main bearing caps and the bridge assembly on the engine. Remember that the arrows cast on the caps must point toward the front of the engine.
Do not forget to install the thrust washers.
6. Lightly oil the threads and underside of the bolt heads, then install the bolts and tighten them by hand. Tap the ends of the crankshaft journals with a soft-faced hammer through a brass or lead drift to align the thrust washers and seat the crankshaft before final tightening. Tighten the cap and bridge bolts to the specified torque.
7. Turn the crankshaft by hand several times to check that it rotates freely.
8. Finally, measure the crankshaft end play with a feeler gauge or a DTI gauge (see the section Crankshaft Removal). If the thrust surfaces of the crankshaft are not worn or damaged and new bearings have been installed, the end play must be within the specified range.
9. Install the new rear crankshaft oil seal and bolt its retainer to the block (see the section Rear Crankshaft Oil Seal Installation).
