Inspection of Balance Shafts (4-Cylinder Engines)
INSPECTION
PROCEDURE
1. Thoroughly clean the shafts and carefully inspect the journals for scoring, scratches, signs of excessive wear and overheating. Wear usually appears as mirror-polished areas on the journals.
2. Using a micrometer, measure the diameter at the front and rear edges of each journal. The difference between the readings corresponds to the taper. If the taper exceeds the value specified in the Specifications, replace the shaft.
3. Place each shaft in V-blocks in turn and set a dial test indicator (DTI) on a plane perpendicular to the shaft axis so that its plunger contacts the surface of the center journal. Rotate the shaft in the blocks to determine runout. Compare the results with the Specifications. Excessively bent shafts must be replaced.
4. Measure the shaft journal diameters and the inside diameters of the corresponding bearings. Subtract the first results from the second to determine the shaft-to-bearing running clearance. Compare the results with the Specifications. If the results are outside the permissible range but the shafts are in satisfactory condition, take the block to an automotive service shop for bearing replacement.
