Engine General Overhaul and Major Repair

Alternative Engine Overhaul Options

~2min read

When performing an engine overhaul yourself, you will need to choose the most suitable approach, which determines the overall scope and nature of the work. The need to replace the engine block, connecting rod and piston assemblies, and crankshaft depends on many factors, the main one being the condition of the block. Other factors that determine the scope of work include time and material costs, availability of necessary parts, and the owner's own mechanical skill.

The following main overhaul approaches can be identified:

Repair and replacement of individual components - If the condition of the block and main internal engine components is found to be satisfactory during inspection, the most reasonable solution is to service them individually. In this case, carefully check the condition of the block, crankshaft, and connecting rod and piston assemblies. Even with very slight block wear, the cylinder bores must always be honed.

Use of a crankshaft repair kit - The kit consists of a ground crankshaft and a set of repair connecting rods with pistons installed. Piston rings and bearing inserts are also included. The kit may be intended for installation in a block with standard-size cylinders or in a ground assembly.

Use of a short engine block kit - The short kit includes a cylinder block with the crankshaft and connecting rod and piston assemblies already installed. All crankshaft bearings are fitted with new inserts, and their running clearances are precisely adjusted. The kit is then completed with camshafts, valvetrain components, the cylinder head, and auxiliary units removed from the old engine, without any major mechanical work.

Use of a long engine block kit - The long kit is a short kit plus an oil pump, oil pan, cylinder head with cover, camshaft, valvetrain components, and timing drive (gears with timing belt) with covers. All provided bearings, seals, and gaskets are new, and clearances are adjusted. It only remains to connect the intake manifold with the exhaust manifold and the auxiliary units to the block.

Replacing the complete engine assembly is also possible. Many manufacturer service centers offer this service on an exchange basis, replacing worn-out units with new or remanufactured ones.

Before choosing any of the listed engine overhaul approaches and purchasing the corresponding replacement components, consult automotive service specialists, representatives of the vehicle manufacturer's authorized service center, and more experienced car owners.
