Balance Shaft Removal (4-Cylinder Engines)
REMOVAL
PROCEDURE

1. Insert a long bolt 6 x 100 mm (or a long screwdriver of suitable diameter) into the special hole in the front balance shaft journal, and hold the shaft from turning while loosening the gear retaining bolt.
2. Remove the rear balance shaft gear cover.
3. To lock the rear balance shaft, insert a bolt or screwdriver into the access hole (remove the plug first) in the rear wall of the cylinder block. Unbolt the rear shaft gear cover. Now unbolt and remove the drive gear from the shaft.
Mark the bolt at a distance of 74 mm from the end face. The bolt must not be inserted into the block deeper than this mark.
4. Remove the oil pump cover.

5. Remove the two retaining bolts and remove the front balance shaft thrust plate. Carefully remove the shafts from the block, taking care not to damage the bearing surfaces.
