Installation of Balance Shafts (Four-Cylinder Engines)
PROCEDURE
1. Carefully guide the thoroughly cleaned and lubricated balance shafts into the engine block. Take care not to damage the bearing surfaces.
2. After installing the front balance shaft and tightening its retainer bolts, install the oil pump in place.
3. Install the front balance shaft gear, then, locking the rear shaft with a bolt or screwdriver (see Removal and Inspection of Balance Shafts (4-Cylinder Engines) section), fit and tighten the driven gear of the rear shaft bolt.

4. Lubricate the thrust surfaces of the drive and driven gears with clean molybdenum-based lubricant. Align the groove on the rear flange of the gear with the pointer on the gear cover, then install the cover onto the block while meshing the gears. The gear may rotate slightly clockwise.

5. After the gear cover is installed, check that the mark on the gear is aligned with the pointer on the oil pump cover. If this condition is met, install the mounting bolts and tighten them to the specified torque.
6. For the procedure for installing the balance shaft drive belt, refer to the corresponding section of this chapter.
