Engine General Overhaul and Major Repair

Rear Crankshaft Oil Seal Installation

~1min read

PROCEDURE

1. Before bolting the retainer with the new seal installed to the engine, install the crankshaft and the main bearing caps/bridge assembly in place.
2. Carefully inspect the crankshaft surface contacting the seal for scratches, scoring and other defects that could cause the new seal to fail. Replace a damaged crankshaft.

3. Измерьте штатную глубину посадки старого сальника в гнезде держателя, затем

3. Measure the standard installed depth of the old seal in the retainer bore. Then place the retainer plate edge-down on two wooden blocks of equal height and, using a suitable drift and hammer, drive the old seal out of its bore. Take care not to damage the bore walls.

4. Тщательно протрите держатель, затем смажьте наружный край нового сальника

4. Thoroughly clean the retainer, then lubricate the outer edge of the new seal with clean engine oil. The seal must be installed squarely in the bore, so it is not recommended to tap it into the retainer with a hammer.

5. При отсутствии доступа к прессу сальник можно заправить в гнездо при помощи

5. If a press is not available, the seal can be installed into the bore using a large vise with soft jaws. The seal holder must be clamped between two flat wooden blocks to ensure even load distribution over the entire end face of the seal. As a last resort, a hammer may be used, but tapping must be done through a flat wooden block. Work slowly and make sure the seal does not cock.

6. Before installing the seal holder assembly onto the crankshaft journal, lubricate the seal lips with multi-purpose grease. The holder is installed on the engine without a gasket; instead, apply an even bead of anaerobic sealant 2 mm wide to its mating surface.
7. Press the holder flush against the block, hand-start its mounting bolts, make sure the holder is installed correctly, then tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
