Audio System (vehicles without GPS) - Radio Data System (RDS)
The audio system provides a number of advantages offered by the Radio Data System (RDS).
When traveling through different regions, you can listen to a specific FM station broadcast even when the broadcast frequency changes.
RDS functions are automatically activated when the radio is turned on.
If the received radio station can transmit RDS data, the tuned frequency is shown on the information display, and the name of the radio station is shown in the audio system window on the navigation system display. If the station broadcasts on several frequencies, the audio system automatically tunes to the frequency with the strongest signal. Therefore, while driving, it is not necessary to manually retune the radio to another frequency within the same RDS network.
The RDS system can be activated or deactivated, and RDS program selection is also available. To activate the RDS functions and program selection, turn on the audio system, then, with the audio system on, press the VOL knob again and hold it for more than two seconds.
You will hear a beep. To select a function, press any of the six preset buttons. The preset buttons have the following functions (see below). Pressing a preset button turns the function on or off (in clock mode, it switches between the 24-hour and 12-hour display modes).
Preset button 1:
AF function - search for alternative station frequencies
Preset button 2:
REG function - tuning to local stations
Preset button 3:
PS function - display of the station name
Preset button 4:
TP function - automatic tuning to stations broadcasting traffic messages
Preset button 5:
NEWS function - tuning to stations broadcasting news
Preset button 6:
CLOCK 24H/12H - switches the clock display between 24-hour and 12-hour format

To activate the RDS functions, select 1 AF ON by pressing preset button 1.
To deactivate the RDS functions, select 1 AF OFF.
To store the selected setting in the system memory, press the VOL knob again.
AF function (alternative frequencies) - This function automatically retunes the radio to alternative frequencies of the desired radio program within the RDS network.
REG function (regional stations) - Permanent tuning to local stations without changing the tuned frequency, even with a weak signal.
PS function (station name) - Displays the name of the station being listened to.
TP function (traffic messages) - Automatic tuning to stations broadcasting traffic messages.
NEWS function (news) - This function automatically retunes the radio to the frequencies of radio programs broadcasting short news bulletins.
CLOCK function (clock) - This function allows switching between the 24-hour and 12-hour clock display modes.
If the RDS station signal becomes so weak that the radio can no longer receive it, the system retains the last tuned frequency, which is shown on the display instead of the station name.
In some countries, the RDS function does not operate.
Program name display
When tuned to an RDS station, the reception frequency disappears from the display and is replaced either by the station name or by the program type (PTY). To change the information shown on the display from the station name to the program type or vice versa, press and hold the TA/PTY button for at least two seconds.
For more detailed information on the PTY system, refer to page 220.
Traffic announcement (TA) standby mode
If you press and release the TA/PTY button, the system enters traffic announcement standby mode and the TA indicator appears on the display.
If the automatic tuning to traffic announcement stations (TP ON) is selected, the TP indicator appears on the display. It indicates that traffic messages can be received from stations transmitting this type of information.
Thanks to cross-referencing, traffic announcements can be received while stations broadcasting other program types are playing, within the same RDS network.
You can also listen to traffic information while playing a CD or cassette (if equipped with a cassette deck). If the radio was tuned to a traffic information station and traffic announcement standby mode was activated (TA indicator on) before playback of the CD or cassette started, the audio system will automatically pause playback of the disc (cassette) as soon as a traffic announcement begins.
The TA INFO indicator appears on the display.
When the traffic announcement ends, the system returns to playback of the CD or cassette.
You can adjust the volume during a traffic announcement by turning the volume control knob (VOL).
The volume level is stored, and the next traffic announcement will be broadcast at the same volume. If you set the traffic announcement volume below the minimum level, the system will return to the default volume level (level 9) when the next announcement is broadcast. The volume of PTY NEWS and PTY ALARM announcements can also be adjusted (see page 222).
If the vehicle battery is discharged or disconnected, the traffic announcement volume will also return to the default level 9.
To turn off the traffic announcement function, press the TA/PTY button again.
The TA indicator will disappear from the display.
When TA mode is active, the audio system will only search for radio stations broadcasting traffic announcements (TP) during automatic seek.
Radio Program Type (PTY) Display
Press and hold the PTY button for 2 seconds to activate the PTY display function.
The display shows the type of radio program being broadcast by the selected RDS station. For example, if the station is broadcasting a radio drama, the DRAMA indicator appears on the display. If a science program is being broadcast, the SCIENCE indicator appears. The main program types available to the PTY system are listed below.
NEWS: Short news – facts, events, commentary, reports, etc.

Turn the TUNE knob in either direction to sequentially display the program types (in the order listed above).
After selecting the desired program type, the system starts searching for stations with the same PTY code. When the function is used for the first time, the system sets the NEWS type as the factory default.
After selecting the program type, press either side of the SEEK/SKIP button within 5 seconds. The system will start searching for a PTY station of this type. If no suitable station is found, the system displays NO PTY for 5 seconds and exits search mode.
If the selected RDS station does not transmit program type information, NO PTY is displayed. If the receiver is not tuned to an RDS station, NO RDS is displayed for 5 seconds.
PTY selection mode is canceled 5 seconds after the program type selection with the TUNE knob stops, if no further action is taken.
Some radio stations may broadcast information that does not match the program type name.
In PTY search mode, the FM tuning step is 50 kHz.
When adjusting the AF or TA functions, the tuning step increases to 100 kHz.
CD Playback Interruption for PTY/News Reception
To activate this function, press and hold the TA/PTY button for more than 2 seconds, then select NEWS. While a CD is playing, the system stores the last tuned FM PTY station. When this function is active and news is broadcast on FM, the system pauses CD playback and switches to the news broadcast.
You can adjust the news broadcast volume independently. For volume adjustment, see page 220.
If the transmitted information type changes, or if the station cannot be received for 10 seconds due to a weak signal, the system automatically returns to CD playback mode.
The audio system provides several types of interruptions, including traffic announcements (TA). The function that was activated first has the highest priority. To activate an interruption caused by any other function, the currently active function must be turned off first.
PTY Emergency Alarm Message
The ALARM code is used for emergency broadcasts, such as natural disasters. When this code is received, the ALARM message appears on the display and the volume level changes. After the message is cancelled, the audio system returns to normal operation.
