Cylinder Head Cover Bolt Tightening Sequence

Removal

PROCEDURE

1. Disconnect the spark plug leads and remove the leads from the clips on the cylinder head cover.

2. Loosen the clamps and disconnect the crankcase ventilation hoses from the cylinder head cover.

3. In the reverse of the sequence shown in the Cylinder Head Cover Bolt Tightening Sequence figure, remove the cylinder head cover mounting bolts and washers.

4. Lift off the cylinder head cover, remove the rubber gasket from the cover groove and the spark plug sealing rings from the spark plug holes. On early engines, also remove the rubber plugs inserted into the semicircular recesses in the right wall of the cylinder head. On later engines, these plugs are integral with the cylinder head cover gasket.

5. Inspect the condition of all rubber seals on the cover and replace if necessary.

Installation

PROCEDURE

1. Thoroughly clean the sealing surfaces of the cover and cylinder head, and remove all traces of oil.

2. Apply sealant to the semicircular recesses of the cylinder head. On early engines, install both semicircular plugs into the recesses so that the flat part of the plugs is flush with the cylinder head surface.

3. Install the gasket into the cover groove, making sure it is correctly seated along its entire length.

4. Install the spark plug sealing rings. If necessary, secure the seals by applying a thin layer of sealant.

5. Apply sealant to the gasket approximately 1 cm on both sides of the edges of the semicircular recess for the rear camshaft bearing cap.

6. Carefully install the cylinder head cover in place. Do not allow the rubber cover seals to shift.

7. Make sure the cover is installed correctly, then install the bolts with washers. Tighten the cover bolts in the specified sequence to the specified torque.

8. Connect the hoses to the cover.

9. Connect the leads to the spark plugs and insert the leads into the clips.
