Timing Chain Tensioners and Guides, Drive Sprockets
Removal LOWER CHAIN TENSIONER
PROCEDURE
1. Apply the parking brake, raise the front of the vehicle and place it on support stands.
2. Working from below, remove the two mounting bolts and take out the lower chain tensioner. Remove the gasket, noting its original orientation.
Warning: Do not rotate the crankshaft while removing the tensioner.
UPPER CHAIN TENSIONER
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the three bolts and the right engine mount bracket.
2. Remove the bolts and nuts, then remove the driven camshaft sprocket cover and the gasket (if equipped).
3. On early engines, move the chain tensioner aside and secure it with the hook located on the side surface of the shoe.
4. On later engines, move the chain tensioner aside and secure it with a rod, inserting the rod between the shoe and the chain.
5. Remove the two bolts and take out the tensioner from the cylinder head.
Warning: Do not rotate the crankshaft while removing the tensioner.
LOWER CHAIN GUIDE
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the camshaft chains (see subsection 3.1.1.7).
2. Remove the two bolts and take out the lower chain guide.
LOWER CHAIN TENSIONER SHOE
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the front cover (see subsection 3.1.1.6).

2. Remove the shoe pivot bolt and take out the lower chain tensioner shoe.
UPPER CHAIN GUIDE RAIL (FOR EARLY ENGINES)
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the cylinder head cover (see subsection 3.1.1.4).
2. Remove the two bolts and take out the guide rail.
UPPER CHAIN GUIDE (FOR EARLY ENGINES)
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the camshaft sprocket inspection cover.

2. Remove the two bolts (indicated by arrows) and take out the upper chain guide.
CAMSHAFT SPROCKETS
PROCEDURE
1. Set the No. 1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke.
2. Remove the cylinder head cover.
3. Remove the camshaft sprocket cover.
4. Remove the camshaft sprockets and the upper chain.
INTERMEDIATE SPROCKET AND CRANKSHAFT DRIVE SPROCKET. Remove the timing chains and sprockets (see subsection 3.1.1.7). Inspection: See subsection 3.1.1.
7. Installation LOWER CHAIN TENSIONER
PROCEDURE
1. Make sure the mating surfaces of the tensioner and cover are dry and clean.
2. Install a new gasket, oriented so that the cutout in the gasket aligns with the tensioner lubrication hole.
3. Install the tensioner and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
UPPER CHAIN TENSIONER
PROCEDURE

1. On early-production vehicles, the tensioner shoe must be moved aside and secured with the hook. Install the tensioner assembly on the cylinder head. Tighten the tensioner mounting bolts to the specified torque, then remove the hook (indicated by arrow). Make sure the tensioner shoe pad is pressing firmly against the chain.
2. On later-production vehicles, move the tensioner shoe pad aside and secure it with a rod. Install the tensioner and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Remove the rod and make sure the tensioner shoe pad is pressing firmly against the chain.
3. Make sure the sealing surfaces of the camshaft sprocket cover and the cylinder head are clean and free of moisture and oil. If a gasket was used on the cover, replace it and install it on the cylinder head. If sealing was provided by sealant, apply a continuous bead of sealant around the entire perimeter of the cover. Install the cover and tighten the bolts and nuts to the specified torque.
4. Install the bracket on the right engine mount and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
LOWER CHAIN GUIDE
PROCEDURE
1. Install the guide on the cylinder block.
2. Tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque.
3. Install the chains.
LOWER CHAIN TENSIONER SHOE
PROCEDURE
1. Install the shoe on the cylinder block.
2. Tighten the shaft bolt to the specified torque.
3. Install the front cover.
UPPER CHAIN GUIDE RAIL (FOR EARLY ENGINES)
PROCEDURE
1. Install the upper chain guide on the cylinder head.
2. Tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque.
3. Install the cylinder head cover.
UPPER CHAIN GUIDE (FOR EARLY ENGINES)
PROCEDURE
1. Install the upper chain tensioner damper on the cylinder head.
2. Tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque.
3. Install the camshaft sprocket cover.
DRIVEN CAMSHAFT SPROCKETS
PROCEDURE
1. Install the camshaft sprockets and the upper chain.
2. On early-production engines, install the upper chain guide and the upper chain damper, then tighten all bolts to the specified torque.
3. Install the upper chain tensioner.
4. Install the cylinder head cover.
IDLER SPROCKET AND CRANKSHAFT DRIVE SPROCKET Install the chains and sprockets.
