PROCEDURE
1. It is recommended to disassemble the engine on a dedicated engine stand.
2. If no stand is available, secure the engine on a flat surface.
3. If a remanufactured engine is being purchased, remove all attached components and install them later in exactly the same order as during an independent engine overhaul. Such components (see figure Cylinder Block, Crankshaft and Piston-Connecting Rod Assembly) include: – alternator and power steering pump and/or air conditioning compressor brackets (depending on equipment); – ignition distributor, spark plugs and high-tension leads; – coolant pump and thermostat and radiator hoses; – carburetor or fuel injection components; – all sensors and solenoid valves with wiring; – intake and exhaust manifolds; – fuel pump (for carbureted engines); – engine mounting components; – flywheel/drive plate of the torque converter.
Warning Before removing attached components, make alignment marks on gaskets, oil seals and other parts to simplify assembly.
4. If a short block (i.e., a cylinder block with a matched and installed crankshaft and piston assembly) is being installed, also remove the cylinder head, oil pan, oil pump and timing chains.
5. If a full engine overhaul with complete disassembly is planned, disassemble the engine completely in the following order: – intake and exhaust manifolds; – oil pan; – chains and sprockets; – cylinder head; – flywheel; – piston-connecting rod assembly; – crankshaft.
6. Before disassembly, prepare the required equipment and tools.
