Exhaust System Inspection (service every 30000 km or 12 months)

~1min read

PROCEDURE

1. Inspect the exhaust system from the engine to the tailpipe. Perform the inspection on a cold engine, at least 1 hour after driving. For best access to all system components, raise the engine.

2. If no hoist is available, raise the vehicle and place it on support stands.

3. Check the exhaust pipes and connections for signs of exhaust gas leakage, heavy corrosion and mechanical damage. Make sure all exhaust pipe brackets and hangers are secure and intact. Exhaust gas leaks can usually be located by soot deposits.

4. Loud knocking from the exhaust system is usually caused by loose exhaust pipe mounts and hangers. Rock the pipes and mufflers. If the pipes or mufflers contact suspension components or the underbody, replace the mounting components or, where possible, disconnect the pipes and rotate them relative to each other to provide sufficient clearance from other parts.
