Engine Starting After Overhaul
PROCEDURE
1. After engine assembly is complete, check the oil and coolant levels twice.
2. Check the correct connection of wiring and hoses, and remove all foreign objects from the engine compartment.
3. Disconnect the spark plug leads and remove the spark plugs. Remove the high-tension lead from the distributor cap and securely connect it to ground.
4. Crank the engine with the starter until the oil pressure warning lamp goes out.
5. Install the spark plugs and reconnect the spark plug leads and the distributor lead.
6. Start the engine. The engine should start after a short period required to fill the fuel line with fuel.
7. As the engine warms up, carefully check for oil, fuel or coolant leaks. Unusual odors and smoke from parts exposed to high temperature are acceptable due to burning off of residual oil.
8. If everything is normal, wait until the upper radiator hose becomes warm, then stop the engine and check the oil and coolant levels.
9. Check the ignition timing and idle speed, then stop the engine.
10. After a few minutes, check the oil and coolant levels and top up if necessary.
11. If the cylinder head bolts have been tightened in accordance with this description, do not retighten the cylinder head bolts when the engine is started for the first time after overhaul.
12. If new pistons, piston rings, and main and connecting rod bearings have been installed, the engine must be broken in over the first 800 km (500 miles) of driving.
13. During the break-in period, do not drive with the throttle fully open or at excessively low speed in any gear.
14. After the break-in period, it is recommended to replace the engine oil and oil filter.
