Gasoline Engine, 1.4 and 1.6 Liter Displacement
GENERAL INFORMATION
This section describes repair operations for the engine performed directly on the vehicle. If the engine has been removed from the vehicle and disassembled, some preliminary disassembly operations may be omitted. The 1.4 and 1.6 L engines belong to the GA series installed on Nissan vehicles. The engines are 16-valve with overhead camshafts, four in-line cylinders and two camshafts. The engine is mounted transversely at the front of the vehicle. The transmission is mounted on the left side of the engine.
The crankshaft has 5 main bearings. Crankshaft end play is adjusted by selecting thrust half-washers installed on the upper half of the center main bearing.
Connecting rod bearings consist of two shells installed in the connecting rod and in the connecting rod cap. The connecting rods are connected to the pistons by piston pins, which move freely in the connecting rod small end and are secured by snap rings. The pistons are cast from aluminum alloy. Each piston has three rings: two compression rings and one oil control ring.
The intake and exhaust valves are closed by coil springs and move inside valve guides pressed into the cylinder head together with the valve seats. If the seat and guide are excessively worn, they can be pressed out and replaced with new ones.
The camshafts are driven by a chain and operate 16 valves through bucket-type tappets. The tappets are installed under the camshafts. Valve clearances are adjusted by selecting special shims of the required thickness. The lower camshaft journal bearings are the bores machined in the cylinder head bosses.
Engine lubrication is provided by an oil pump driven from the crankshaft nose. Oil passes through the oil strainer with a coarse filter, then through the oil filter screwed into the engine block, and is supplied to the oil galleries inside the cylinder block and crankcase, from which it is directed to the crankshaft main bearings and the camshaft journals. Connecting rod bearings are lubricated under pressure through holes in the crankshaft. Camshaft cams, valve stems and other engine parts are lubricated by splashing.
