Removal

The ignition voltage is generated by individual ignition coils located above each spark plug.

  • Switch off the ignition.

1,8-/2,0-L-motor

  • Remove oil filler cap. Unscrew cylinder head cover - 1 -. The illustration shows the 1.8-L engine.

1,8-/2,0-L-motor

  • Disconnect the connector from each ignition coil. Unscrew ground cable - 1 -.

  • Remove each ignition coil by unscrewing 2 bolts - 2 - and pulling it upward off the spark plug.

Installation
  • Install the ignition coils with spark plug connectors and secure with 2 bolts. Note: the spark plug connector cannot be replaced separately from the ignition coil.

  • Engage the cable connector on the ignition coil.

  • Fasten the ground cable.

  • Install the cylinder head cover. Fit the oil filler cap.

Check
1,8-/2,0-L-motor

The illustration shows the connector on an ignition coil.

  1. Terminal 15

  2. Terminal 4

  3. Terminal 1

  • Connect the ohmmeter between terminals 1 and 15 (- 1 - and - 3 -) to the contacts of the ignition coil (not the connector) and measure primary resistance.

Specified value: 1.8-L engine: 0.60 Ω

2.0-L engine 9/95 - 10/98: 0.40 Ω

2.0-L engine 11/98-8/00: 0.73 Ω

Warning: the resistance of the secondary side (between spark plug connection, terminal 4 and ground connection) cannot be measured.
