Removal

On the 1.6 L engine, a dual ignition coil is bolted to the camshaft housing. Before working on the valve train, the ignition coils must be removed together with their bracket.

  • Switch off the ignition.

  • Disconnect the spark plug connectors from the ignition coils. Mark them before disconnecting so they can be reconnected to the same position.

  • Disconnect the multi-pin connector for the ignition coils (left arrow) and the connector on the coolant temperature sensor (bottom center arrow).

  • Unscrew the ignition coils and bracket with 4 nuts (arrows) and remove them.

Installation
  • Screw the ignition coil bracket onto the cylinder head.

  • Connect the multi-plug to the ignition coils and the coolant temperature sensor.

  • Connect the spark plug cable connectors to the ignition coils according to the markings.

Check

Note: resistance values apply at an ambient temperature of +23 °C.

  • Mark and disconnect all connections on the ignition coil, see "Removal".

  • Check primary resistance. The center connector contact is the positive terminal; the two outer contacts are the negative terminals. Connect the ohmmeter probes between the upper negative terminal and the positive terminal (center contact) - a -. This checks the resistance of the ignition coil for cylinders 2 and 3. Then connect the ohmmeter between the lower negative terminal and the positive terminal (center contact) - b -. This checks the resistance of the ignition coil for cylinders 1 and 4.

  • Check secondary resistance - c - (cylinders 1 and 4) and - d - (cylinders 2 and 3). To do so, connect the ohmmeter probes to the high-voltage outputs in each case.
