Note: on diesel engines, fuel pressure is measured in the line between the filter and the injection pump. A specialist workshop must be consulted for this.

Make sure the work area is well ventilated.

Fuel vapors are toxic. No open flames, no smoking. Risk of fire! Keep a fire extinguisher ready.

  • An intact, fully charged battery is required for an accurate test.

  • In the luggage compartment, use suitable tools, for example Hazet 799-3, to unclip the cover and unscrew the round cover for the fuel level sender (arrows).

  • The illustration shows the removed fuel level sender with fuel pump. When installed, only the retaining plate with connections is visible. Pull off the quick connector on the fuel supply line - 5 - by pressing together the 2 side tabs.

Note: the fuel system is under pressure. Catch escaping fuel with a rag.

  • Push a fuel-resistant hose with an 8 mm diameter onto the fuel supply line and route it into a fuel-resistant measuring container with a capacity of approx. 2 l.

  • Disconnect the fuel pump relay. The relay is located in the relay box in the engine compartment, or on the 1.8 L and 2.0 L engines, below the glove box, see page 86.

  • Connect terminals 30 and 87 on the relay socket with a test lead (diameter 1.5 mm) and let the fuel pump run for approx. 30 seconds, see chapter "Check the fuel pump relay".

  • Compare the delivered fuel quantity (30 seconds) with the target value:


  • If too little fuel is delivered, check the pump's supply voltage. A voltage drop of 1 volt causes a delivery loss of approx. 10%. Charge or replace the battery if necessary.

  • If the delivery quantity is still too low, replace the fuel pump.

  • Push on the fuel line; it must lock into place.

  • Start the engine and check the connection for leaks.

  • Screw on the cover for the fuel level sender and fold back the luggage compartment cover.
