On the 1.4 L and 1.6 L engines, the fuel pump relay is located on the relay carrier in the engine compartment. On the 1.8 L and 2.0 L engines, it is located in the passenger compartment, under the glove box on the right. The relay supplies power to the electric fuel pump. To access the relays in the engine compartment, loosen the plastic screw by hand and remove the cover.

If the fuel pump must run to test the injection system while the engine is not running, disconnect the relay and connect terminal 30 and terminal 87 with a short auxiliary lead, wire diameter 1.5 mm.

1.4 L engine:
Relais fur kraftstoffpumpe prufen

  1. Fuel pump fuse

  2. Fuel injection and ignition system fuse

  3. Fuel injection and ignition system relay

  4. Fuel pump relay

1.6 L engine:
1,6-L-motor

  1. Lambda sensor connector

  2. Fuel injection and ignition system fuse

  3. Relay fuse

  4. Double relay for fuel pump and fuel injection/ignition system

1.8 L engine:
1,8-L-motor

  1. Fuel pump relay

  2. Fuel injection and ignition system relay

  3. Fuel injection and ignition system fuse

  4. Fuel pump fuse

2.0 L engine:
2,0-L-motor

  1. Relay for activated charcoal filter system

  2. Ignition and fuel injection system relay

  3. Fuel pump relay

  4. Lambda sensor fuse

  5. Fuel pump fuse

Note: the battery must be charged to test the fuel pump relay. Observe further information on relay testing in the "Electrical system" chapter.
  • Check the fuel injection system fuses and replace them if necessary, see illustrations.

  • Disconnect the fuel pump relay and replace it with a relay that is in good condition.

2,0-L-motor

  • If no good relay is available, bridge terminals 30 and 87 in the relay socket with a thick cable.

The fuel pump must now start audibly (have an assistant listen at the tank if necessary). Otherwise, there is a fault in the supply line or the fuel pump.

2,0-L-motor

Note: on the 1.6 L engine, disconnect the double relay and bridge terminals 4 and 8. The fuel pump must now run audibly.
  • The workshop can check the delivery rate and fuel pressure in the fuel system. Special equipment is required for this.

Installation
  • Insert the fuses and relays and screw on the cover.

  • Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal. Set the clock and enter the radio anti-theft code.

  • Start the engine and check that it functions correctly.
